Molten sulfur is a commonly carried commodity that uses purpose built cars for transport. It's most common uses are the production of sulfuric acid and other chemicals, fertilizers, gunpowder, matches, insecticides, detergents, dyes, fungicides and the vulcanization of tires. Sulfur is produced through direct mining of elemental sulfur or through the refining of oil and natural gas.
At room temperature, sulfur is a soft, yellow solid, while molten sulfur turns a blood red color. In order to load and unload this material, it is heated until it becomes liquid. The car's contents are kept from losing a great deal of heat in transit by a 6" thick layer of insulation. Heating of the material in the car during unloding is achieved by passing steam through a series of heating coils welded to the tank envelope hidden under the car's insulation and thin metal jacket.
This Trinity Industries design was first made around 1980, and possibly as early as 1978 or 1979. About 1000 were produced and most are still in service today. Molten sulfur tank cars can be seen in unit train service as well as in small groups. A variety of reporting marks were applied to this car and we will try to offer a good number of these.

The Rail Yard Models kit will be very similar in design and construction to our Sulfuric Acid Tank Car kits. The tank body will be a single piece tube with separate tank ends. Smaller cast details will include bolster parts, manway, loading and unloading appliances and draft gear parts. The kit will use etched metal for the end frames, loading platform brake details and other fine details. The kit will include trucks with semi-scale metal wheels, decals and our CD-ROM with full color instructions and prototype photos. The draft gear castings are designed to accept shelf couplers required to be used on tank cars. (Kadee #119 or McHenry #71, not included in kit)
